ID Cards

Here is a link to the BBC's report today on the government's latest pronouncements on its despised ID card scheme.

Despite massive public opposition, led by NO2ID and political parties such as the UK Independence Party , the government is still going ahead. What they are now saying is that their 'voluntary scheme', whereby you have to have an ID card if you want a passport, will have to run for several years before they can pass legislation to make them compulsory.

"you have to have an ID card if you want a passport"

Is that true? That is outrageous!

Yes Mark, sadly it is. In 2006 NO2ID got an agreement from the government that we would be able to renew our passports before they expired, so that we could avoid having to pay the additional fee and end up with an ID card. It seems that the government are now prepared to allow us to refuse and ID card, when we buy a passport, until 2010. After that it will not be long before they become compulsory anyway.

So time to 'lose' the passport and ask for a replacement in 2009 then?
