Goal of the Century? FC United of Manchester

Had a cracking day yesterday watching FC United play Retford United in Nottinghamshire. We won 4 0 but the highlight has to be the following goal. Yes, the wind was in the right direction, but it's not often you see a keeper score from within his own penalty area. But then again, not every team has a keeper like Sam Ashton.

Apparently their pitch is 115yds long. So this kick is about 107yds.

I can't think of anything analogous in American football except maybe a returner forgetting that a kickoff is a live ball and letting it roll to a stop...at which point someone from the kicking team picks it up and scores a touchdown. I've seen it once.

Anyway...great goal. And it looks like a great way to spend the afternoon.

It's great fun Erik. Until 2005, when the Glazers bought Manchester United and dumped £750m debt on the club, we used to to travel to some of Eurtope's finest stadiums in Barcelona, Turin, Munich etc. watching United. Now we travel to tiny Retford watching FC Unitd of Manchester in grounds that only hold a few thousand. And we're loving it!
