The Death of the Labour Party?

I've had a fantastic weekend hearing journalist after journalist announcing the imminent demise of the Labour Party, if only. The fate of the Liberal Democrats RIP was obvious from 2010, only as big an idiot as Vince Cable could have thought they wouldn't depart this world at the general election. But the end of the Labour Party? I fear not.

Judging by the wailing and gnashing of pinko liberal teeth the lefties are still arrogant enough to think that they are right and the gullible rest of us were duped by the wicked right-wing media. Yes, patronising bastards all. Of course the BBC, The Guardian, the Independent all slavishly following a right-wing agenda and brainwashing the populace. Don't make me laugh.

The left think they have a monopoly on humanitarianism and that much abused and overused word 'caring'. Well they don't. What they do have a monopoly on is infantilising the population. Cradle to grave socialism takes away peoples' right to choose, to make their own decisions, to think for themselves. It is neither caring nor compassionate to blindly steal peoples' money through taxation then sit back and let the state do what it wants. Because this statist philosophy has predominated since 1945, to varying degrees under Labour and most Conservative governments, we have a sizeable proportion of the population who are welfare dependent and don't expect to go to work. Why should they with an all embracing welfare state, the most generous in the world that will mollycoddle them from cradle to grave?

What lost Labour the general election was that people have had enough. They see the homeless protesters dossing in tents in Manchester and know they are conning people. Most are homeless because they are 'substance abusers' and/or chronic alcoholics. I do not go with the current orthodoxy that drink and drug abuse are illnesses, just like any other. They are a result of weakness. Let people form charitable groups to help people in these circumstances, don't expect the government to do it because that means we pay. If I want to support a homeless charity I would much rather choose to do it than be forced to do it.

Labour seemed to speak too for the immigrant population, especially the muslim population. In fact Labour are increasingly seen as fighting the corner of every minority group in the country, whether they need help or not while the working population is bled dry through ever increasing taxation for ever more government spending money. Most people rumbled that Labour plays divide and rule, creating an image of 'caring' and defending for vulnerable groups who aren't actually vulnerable at all. Labour creates the myth and feeds off it as it does with the constant lies about Tory privatisation of the NHS.

Labour claim to be no longer in bed with the trade unions but Miliband was elected by the unions and, even with one man one vote, the current candidates for the Labour leadership are grovelling to an unreconstructed political dinosaur like Len McCluskey of the Unite trade union who has also just seen off Jim Murphy, leader of the Scottish Labour Party.

When you see the anti government demonstrations, which are inevitable with the left sulking like spoilt brats since May 7th, just look at the participants. Very few are the poor, the disaffected, the homeless, the supposedly oppressed minorities of one sort or another. They are students and assorted members of the chattering classes. You know the ones I mean, the muesli chomping do gooders, usually comfortably off whites who take offence at the word blackboard on behalf of people far too sensible to be actually offended by innocent use of language. They probably organise foodbanks so the unemployed can squander their benefits on drink and drugs instead of food but are too naïve and gullible to realise the damage they are doing. As long as they get a warm, self satisfied inner glow they don't care about the impact of their stupidity.

As long as there are so many gullible fools around, and millions of sheep rushing into what they see as the safety of a gang calling itself a trade union, there will be a Labour Party. But the power and influence of Labour and the unions will continue to fade because they've been rumbled. The idiots on anti-austerity/anti-government marches/mini-riots are the political flotsam and jetsom pathetically going through the motions of empty protest without actually realising that nobody takes them seriously any more than they do Labour or the trade unions.

General Election 2015-Liberal Democrats

I know we shouldn't speak ill of the dying but come on, the Liberal Democrats? I think the last five years have shown what many involved in politics have known and stated for decades, that the Liberal Democrats are unprincipled political whores who would sell their souls for short term political gain. Oh, sorry, they did sell their souls for short term political gain. Remember them scurrying like rats through a sewer after the last election from Cameron to Brown begging to join their gangs? Not one of British politics sunnier episodes and look at the last five years, no wonder they are set for meltdown.

The highlight of the last general election night was seeing misfit Lib Dem Lembit Opik lose his seat. The highlight this year will surely be seeing misfit Lib Dem Nick Clegg losing his seat. Bring it on!

Welfare Police State

When I heard that Greater Manchester Police were banging on about people having a go at Goths and Punks having committed 'hate crimes' I thought it was an April Fool's joke a little late. Then I heard an interview with a senior officer and I realised that it really is GMP being a bunch of wet, pinko liberal arsewipes trying to ingratiate themselves with 'sections of the community' while alienating, which they don't seem to realise, the vast majority.

When this idiot was being interviewed I fell deeper and deeper into despair. The interviewer kept asking him if this meant that an attack on a Goth would get more resources than an attack on a bloke in a suit and tie he kept wriggling until I almost felt sorry for him. Well actually, I ended up wondering how he'd ever managed to become a copper, let alone a senior one but that's beside the point.

When I was at school I was taught that we were all equal under the law. No longer it seems. So-called 'hate crimes' apparently get priority meaning that somebody else, somebody who isn't the correct race, the correct sexuality, the correct sub-culture or whatever, is going to get second class treatment by the police if assaulted, abused or anything else. Another example of the tyranny of the minorities.

Before some leftard starts having a pop about me being some kind of 'ist' I'm not. I believe that the full weight of the law should be brought to bear on any criminal, whether motivated to carry out a violent crime against somebody because of their sexuality or because of which football team they support. It's surely commonsense isn't it?

Then this week we've had whining in the football fraternity about homophobic chanting against Brighton supporters. Again I misunderstood at first and thought that being gay must have become a prerequisite for supporting Brighton FC. But no, it was opposition fans having a pop at the liberal culture of the town with the country's first Green MP by chanting 'does your boyfriend know you're here?' at Brighton fans. Now, maybe I'm being all hard and macho but I hardly think that's going to drive any self-respecting gay person to weep any more than chanting 'you fat bastard' at me will drive me to a bottle of whisky and a gob full of paracetomol. Sodding hell some people really should  look at what hatred really is and get a sense of perspective.

Now if I've upset, or offended anybody please do not read any further. You've been warned.

I've spoken to a few people about that evil bastard Mick Philpott this week. The general consensus being that we hope he gets a bit of corporal punishment when he's in chokey from his fellow campers. Indeed a couple of us pondered the satisfaction to be gained by getting imprisoned if you could be guaranteed access to Mr Philpott. But on the whole I decided that wasn't a very good, or very practical idea.

I know that certain newspapers and politicos have been attacked for daring to link the welfare state with Philpott's crime of torching his own home and killing six children, but I think they are right to make a link. There is a problem in this country when the authorities hand over ever more of our cash in benefits to scum like Philpott who breed children to sponge more money from the system. Personally I would scrap child benefit, why should people receive tax money for having children? If they can't afford them don't have them.

In the case of Philpott didn't alarm bells ring that he was living, with two women and sixteen children, in a three bedroomed council house? If we have to waste money on social workers aren't these the kinds of cases they are supposed to sort out? I suspect their attitude would have been to tolerate Philpott and his harem as just another lifestyle choice. It wasn't the welfare state that made him do what he did, it didn't make him a vile psychopath, but it certainly created the environment for his evil to be enacted.

Fair enough, the country isn't full of psychos like that, but the welfare state has created a culture where the lazy, the feckless and the irresponsible can survive comfortably without having to trouble themselves with the responsibilities and hassles of those who work to pay their taxes to fund the parasites.

If welfare benefits aren't too high then why do so many people from eastern Europe come here to work despite us having so many unemployed? They work hard and evidently find coming here worthwhile, so benefits are quite obviously too high. Just a shame we don't have a government strong enough to deal with the problem.

Human Rights? Don't Make Me Laugh!

They're a bit like the word 'fascist' I suppose, the words 'human rights', the more they are bandied about the more they lose any kind of significance or meaning. Question the wisdom of uncontrolled immigration from the EU and you'll be labelled a fascist by some swivel eyed pinko liberal loon. Dare to mention the Daily Mail and aforementioned swivel eyed loon will label it fascist. The Mail is not my paper of choice but come on, fascist?

Then we have the ludicrous obsession with human rights. There's a good argument against the tyranny of the majority, after all, if 51% support the slaughter of the first born in every household does democracy say that it should happen? Of course not, democracy is tempered by morality, which tells us it is wrong to slaughter the first born. But for decades now our system, including our system of morals, has been undermined. Militant atheism is one of the most virulent tools being used against our system and human rights are being used as a very effective weapon. What the modern obsession with human rights has given us is the tyranny of the minorities.

One example of the tyranny of the minorities was the forced closure of Catholic adoption agencies for refusing to place children with gay couples. These agencies did magnificent work for children and parents for many, many years but because of our Catholic beliefs the state closed them down by declaring it illegal to refuse gay couples the chance to adopt. The rights of gay people obviously override the rights of Christians in this country.

So what happened to diversity? What happened to the much trumpeted concept of people from all cultures, beliefs and religions happily living side by side? Great idea, unless you're a Christian. Then increasingly you are left on the outside of this wonderful world of diversity and tolerance. Surely, with any number of adoption agencies catering for gay couples, there is room for agencies who object on grounds of conscience? Couldn't gay couples just find an agency that would help them adopt? What next, close down Catholic churches unless they cater for Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and so on?

This week we have had the results from the European Court of Human Rights. Again, in two of the four cases the rights of Christians were trampled on in order to support the rights of gay people. Surely on grounds of conscience, and in the interests of diversity and freedom of choice, people should be allowed to decline to marry gay couples or to provide them sex counselling? As with adoption there are any number of counsellors and registrars who would have no objection to counselling gays or presiding over civil ceremonies for gay people so their refusal on grounds of conscience is not depriving gays of their rights. But these people have now lost their basic right to work because of their beliefs and consciences.

Increasingly 'human rights' are being used to oppress the majority. The more those two words are bandied around the more oppressed the citizens of the UK become. The police state is tightening its grip on an almost daily basis.

England, Home of UK Uncut, Occupy and other Silly Prats

We needed a change this week, Mrs B and yours truly. It's healthy to have a change of scenery now and then, so we packed a few bits and cleared off to France.

We stayed in a little town an hour from Calais on a nice little camp site, we have a little caravan you see. For four or five weeks of the year we travel in our caravan. That's what caravans are for, travelling. It's great, because after a few nights we hook up and move on to somewhere new. We travel.

So it was refreshing to hear, while we were away in our caravan, that the Dale Farm residents had been moved on. They must have got really lazy and I'm sure they will be grateful soon when they find pastures new. Ten years on one site? I'd be going stir crazy after ten weeks on one site. And these cheeky gits call themselves 'travellers'! Of course you won't be pleased if they land up next to you and your home, but that's another tale.

Then there are the nobheads 'occupying' places like the outside of St Paul's Cathedral in London because they're a bit fed up. Funny that, because when we got fed up and wanted a change we used to go camping too. Then we got a bit old and hey presto, we got a caravan! See the link? But we used to camp in places like the Alps and the mountains of North Wales, not concreted urban areas.

We have been fed up with political crap for years too. So we got involved with politics. In fact I've been active in politics for over 30 years. But what has happened in those 30 years? Not a lot because people don't find slogging the streets putting leaflets through letterboxes 'sexy'. They don't like having to persuade others, even those on the same side, that x, y, or z is the way forward. They take another route. They grandstand. They seek attention and an adrenalin rush by posing around, making twats of themselves and annoying most of the population.

You had 'peace camps' in the '80s with dickheads in dreadlocks juggling in silly hats. You had 'Swampy' and co trying to save woodland in the '90s with dickheads in dreadlocks juggling in silly hats. Now we have dickheads in dreadlocks juggling in silly hats to 'end poverty' outside St Paul's.

Pose around on YouTube and make a few headlines on dodgy satellite TV news stations, it's much more pleasant than leafletting Gorton or Wythenshawe on a wet Wednesday night in October. So why don't people rush to support your UK Uncut and Occupy nutters and sweep them to power? Because most people think they are prats and lefty mongs.

Ethnic Cleansing In The UK?

According to the emotionally incontinent pinko-liberals gypsies are being ethnically cleansed in Essex. Essex, the new Rwanda/Kosovo/Romania. I first came across this on Twitter and thought it was just one mad loony Tweeting crap. I became slightly concerened when a Lib Dem member of the House of Lords retweeted the original without challenging the obvious nonsense of the claim.

If you don't know then an illegal gypsy site is soon to be cleared in Essex. They will be forced off the land and asked to move on. They will not be attacked in the middle of the night, their children bayonetted and their caravans torched. Nor will they be imprisoned in camps in the countryside to be systematically starved to death.

Now Vanessa Redgrave is fighting their corner, a sure sign that the gypsies are a lost cause and that evicting them is the right thing to do. Remember Vanessa Redgrave's Workers Revolutionary Party? The party that is widely believed to have received funding from Colonel Ghaddafi and still seems to support him. Another socialist lost cause.

But the worst thing is that those who claim that clearing an illegal gypsy camp is ethnic cleansing, are insulting in the most dire, amoral and irresponsible way, the true victims of ethnic cleansing in many parts of the world. They are belittling the vile actions of tyrants around the world in their ruish to attack anything that we in Brtitain do or believe in.

PG Wodehouse And The Nazis

In 1941 PG Wodehouse was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was imprisoned by the Germans after they invaded France. He was living in Le Touquet and was trying to get to Spain when captured. He and his wife were imprisoned in Germany.

While there he did some broadcasts to the United States at the behest of the German authorities. He later admitted to naivety, but the broadcasts can hardly be said to be Lord Haw Haw style pro-Nazi propaganda. Indeed his humorous digs at his hosts seem to have been too subtle for them to grasp, and for some of the left-wing media to grasp today. Misguided at best, but what would you do in the same position? That's it really.

But the vindictive left-wing media, particularly the Independent, are pillorying him today as the government papers around his case are released. They see Wodehouse as an upper class representative of the old imperial establishment. Perhaps if they read some Wodehouse, especially Jeeves and Wooster where Roderick Spode leads his Blackshorts in a highly entertaining parody of fascism, they could perhaps find a little objectivity.

But irony, indeed humour generally, are not particular strengths of the sanctimonious liberal left.

Chavs, Polly Toynbee and the Fabian Society

I don't think there is anything more patronising and insulting than socialists and/or pinko liberals. They occupy a non-existent moral high ground and look down on the rest of us with smug smiles, especially insulting to the people they think are incapable of standing on their own feet, the "working classes".

Their latest manufactured outrage is against the word "chav". They claim it is demeaning to the glorious workers and a prat from the Fabian Society wants the fascistic Commisssion for Equality and Blah Blah Blah to start prosecuting people who use the word.  Of course Polly Toynbee is leading this particularly ludicrous moral crusade.

I'm working class I think, although I find classification of humans in that way pretty demeaning so don't personally accept the concept of working class, middle class etc. It's about as useful as classifying people as ugly, plain or stunning. Or skinnny, well built and fat. Toynbee would no doubt find those classifications highly patronising, so why not classifying people by perceived income/social status?

"Chav" to  me is nothing to do with being working class, it describes somebody who is vulgar, tasteless and probably not the type of person you'd want to spend an evening out with. In fact it describes Polly Toynbee rather than any working class person I know.

The left in this country have always had a problem keeping a sense of perspective, and an article in the New Statesman about government cuts in the UK proves that they have become even more deluded with the fall of New Labour.

To compare people campaigning against cuts in the UK with those fighting for freedom in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere in the Middle East is a gross insult to people suffering repression the world over. Typical do-gooding liberal bullshit from a pillock called Laurie Penny, practising freedom of speech in a nice cosy office in London.

Stoned to death for adultery, or having the opening hours of your local library reduced. Now, which one is worse?

The Hatred of the Left

Yesterday I blogged about the hatred and venom of the left, and their hatred has been further exposed today in the media in relation to the terrible events in Arizona yesterday. I heard George Galloway attacking the right for building an atmosphere of hate. He didn't have an answer when Charlie Wolf asked him who he thought had strung up an effigy of Sarah Palin during the US election campaign. And anyway, Galloway throwing around accusations of hatred? A little bit rich I thought.

Talk of the hatred unleashed since Obama became President seems to overlook the pure venom and hatred directed at George Bush. Don't forget the left persistently lied about him rigging the election, although it was proved that he hadn't. They even accused him of leaving people to die in New Orleans because he was a racist. Is that the politics of love? And there was much worse than that directed at George Bush.

Incidentally, don't forget who it was who said in 2008: “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.” Can't remember? It was that darling of the left, President Barack Obama.

Anybody who was alive in the 1970s and 1980s saw the hatred of the left in Town Halls and Trade Unions throughout the country. Dare admit to being a Conservative in certain workplaces in those decades and you would find yourself 'sent to Coventry', or worse in some cases, by so-called colleagues. Many of us actually witnessed or experienced the violence of the left in those decades.

They say the far-left and the far-right are two sides of the same coin, and I tend to agree with that position. The lunatic who went on the rampage in Arizona had been reading Mein Kampf and Das Kapital it transpires. Nutters like that pop up occasionally, we had one up the road in Cumbria last year. You cannot legislate for psychopaths sadly, no matter what we do a nutter will find a way. Ban guns, he may drive a car into a crowd next time.

Sarah Palin and Liberal Scum

Last night was one of those strange nights, largely due to the modern media. As the terrible events in Tucson, Arizona unfolded watching the TV, and being on Twitter made it seem so much closer than previous tragedies that have rocked different parts of the world. It is terrible for all involved and we must all pray that Gabrielle Giffords makes a full recovery, not forgetting all the other victims and their families.

What really shocked me around the unfolding tragedy was the response of the liberal left. Within minutes they started pointing the finger. And who was it pointed at? No surprises, that figure of hate to the left, for the liberal left thrive on hatred, Sara Palin. Yes, no evidence, no reasoning just a typical knee jerk reaction and someone to instantly blame, someone on the right.

So why did the left immediately point the finger at Sara Palin? Because she had 'targetted' Congresswoman Giffords, among others, on her website. So obviously some nutter takes it literally and hey presto, Palin's to blame. How simplistic, how hateful, how very liberal left. So we can only assume that the next time Labour talk about a 'decapitation' strategy they will bear in mind that they could be encouraging the beheading of political opponents! If you don't know, and might be encouraged by this blog to take a machete to a political opponent please don't. Decapitation means working for the removal in elections of senior or leading political oppponents rather than their literal decapitation.

When the left rattle on about hatred, love and peace it is as well to remember the way they treated George Bush, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and others, indeed anybody they happen to disagree or disapprove of. Socialism is based on hatred and venom, it is the natural territory of the liberal left and Marxists all over the world. We have a duty to fight them everywhere.  

Morrissey and the Chinese

Morrissey's done it again, and the Guardian reading pinko liberal misfits are spitting feathers and accusing him of racism.

If you don't know Morrissey is a musical genius and dedicated vegan and animal welfare campaigner. Personally I have no problem with eating meat, indeed foie gras is one of my favourites, and I enjoy the odd bullfight. But in a free world we are all entitled to our likes and dislikes and are free to criticise those we disapprove of.

Morrissey's mistake has been to take free speech literally, how very naive. In a magazine interview he described the Chinese, because of their appalling treatment of animals generally, in circuses especially, as 'almost a subspecies'. Fair comment in my view. Even as a dedicated meat eater there are limits and I think the Chinese, as with their human rights record, are a pretty vile mob. Their treatment of humans is what really angers me, and the fact that the pinko liberals prefer to ignore it and instead slam the USA for the odd execution just highlights the left's stinking hypocrisy.

Israeli Settlement Produce

So now, kowtowing to the leftist militant supporters of Palestine, the government is to introduce a form of anti-Semitic food labelling. Produce from the Israeli West Bank is to be marked 'Israeli settlement produce' so that the pinko liberal middle classes can boycott in favour of 'Palestinian produce'.

Why not go the whole hog and put a Star of David on it and the word Jew? But at least it means I can do my bit and make sure I buy nothing Palestinian.

Democracy

Pondering the vote this week in Switzerland I couldn't help thinking that the people of France, Holland and Ireland voted against the Lisbon Treaty but they, and we, got it any way.

Then the bleeding heart liberals go all self righteous and condemn the Swiss for voting against more minarets going up than the four that already exist in that country. The chances are the decision will be overturned when the Council of Europe stick their long noses in anyway:

“Bearing in mind that it is a fundamental right of democratic states to debate and vote on issues of importance to their societies, the referendum held yesterday on the construction of new minarets in Switzerland raises concerns as to whether fundamental rights of individuals, protected by international treaties, should be subject to popular votes,” said the council’s secretary general, Thorbjørn Jagland, a former foreign minister of Norway. “The ban on the construction of new minarets is linked to issues such as freedom of expression, freedom of religion and prohibition of discrimination guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights.

“Therefore it would be up to the European Court of Human Rights to decide, should an application be submitted to the court, whether the prohibition of building new minarets is compatible with the convention.”

So forgive me for asking, but exactly what type of 'democracy' are the forces in Afghanistan and Iraq fighting to impose on those poor sods? Is it the one that says the people can have their say, as long as they agree with the political class?

Anton du Beke and Carol Thatcher-Oppressed!

The police state marches on, gathering momentum each day as the politically correct establishment turn the British Isles into a huge prison island. I wasn't going to comment on the Anton du Beke business, it seems so trivial. A dancer, in a private converstaion says that his dance partner, after spray tanning "looks like a Paki". Two weeks later somebody makes it public, wow, must have been a slow news day, and all hell breaks loose. Yet again the quislings and collaborators complain to the BBC, 500 members of the public with lives sadder than slugs and brains smaller than a mosqito's.

I decided to comment today because I have just heard professional offendee Jasmin Alibha-Brown on her soap box. If that bitch finds this country so disgusting, racist, imperialist why not piss off back to Uganda? Because she knows where she can have a cushy life, plauded by the self-loathing pinko-liberal establishment. She would probably be treated like the parasite she is in Uganda where, I suspect, they have more important issues to exercise the mind.

Her argument today was that it is OK to use the word "Paki" in a private dinner party for example, but not in a public space. Even when she was told, repeatedly, that he had used it in a private converstion she kept banging on about public space.

Then poor old Carol Thatcher was dragged in yet again for saying that a tennis player, with a particularly '70s style haircut "looked like a gollywog". It now seems that Carol Thatcher's sin was to not apologise. So she lost her job for perceived rudeness rather than 'racism' after all. The tennis player did actually look like a gollywog by the way.

But the great irony was that Jo Brand, the fat, ugly comedienne was the one that found the gollywog reference offensive. So talking about vaginas, penises and bodily functions and so on in your act isn't offensive Jo, but referring to a gollywog is?

Finally, I am a Mancunian, but Scousers and others refer to us as Mancs. So the next time a Scouser shouts: "Piss off you Manc bastard" at me, I look forward to him losing his job, if any Scousers actually work these days, and to my numerous appearances on news and current affairs shows explaining how mortally offended I am, not just for me but for Mancunians throughout the world.

Unless he does it in a private dinner party. Highly unlikely of course, as most Scousers aren't house trained!

Labour Frauds And Islington Gobshites!

Here is the continuing coverage of McBride, former top aide to Gordon Brown who, until resigning last week, was on over £100,000 a year paid from our taxes.

So who is the Labour muppet who made the following statement?

"There is a culture in Westminster amongst largely young men who think that writing this sort of thing on the internet is in some way acceptable, and it is absolutely not.

"Those of us in the front line of politics do our best to ignore it - but it is very difficult. But you have to kind of rise above it and focus on what's important about politics."

Step forward Labour MP for Islington South and Finsbury, Emily Thornberry. I always knew the Islington crowd were full of crap, that quote is proof. Or is she deluded enough to actually think that Gordon Brown is not 'in the front line of politics'? Sadly we all know that, for now anyway, he is.

'You have to kind of rise above it'? Is that the same as saying you need to pretend to rise above it but don't really? Or does she mean you just can't rise above it even if you try?

Liberal or Libertarian?

I occasionally dip into the archive, so here is an article of mine previously published elsewhere but not appearing on my blog before. It is dedicated to Sir Clement Freud RIP:

"THE NINE most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help'." This quote from Ronald Reagan sums up the thoughts of many of us who might describe ourselves as libertarian. But many people still ask what a libertarian, or what libertarianism, actually is.

Like Christianity, or socialism, there is a wide range of views within libertarian thinking. Debate rages on, and will continue to rage amongst libertarians, about what the philosophy is and how libertarians interpret their philosophy in an ever-changing world. There are those who advocate zero tax, on the basis that tax is theft. Others accept that a certain level of taxation is necessary but that it should be minimal. There are those who advocate that a woman has the right to choose abortion, then those of us who would advocate that abortion is an infringement of the right to life, the fundamental human right.

The most common "strapline" used by many libertarian organisations is "for life, liberty and property". In short, libertarians believe in the maximum freedom for the individual and freedom from state interference in business, property and the markets - whereas most modern political parties believe, to varying degrees, in state regulation of most human activity.

The three old parties in Britain are all authoritarian in nature and increasingly see taxation not as a source of vital income for benign essential government activity, but as an intrusive means of controlling the population. For example, the Tories advocated a so-called "green" tax on parking cars in out-of-town shopping areas, supposedly to save the traditional high street. This would actually be a shopping tax, a source of government income.

Libertarians believe in the right of the individual to act freely and that we should be controlled in our behaviour by the responsibility not to harm others by our actions.Some examples of the government acting in opposition to this principle include the recent ban on smoking in public places and the hunting ban.
Certainly smokers should be considerate to those who do not smoke, but pub landlords, for example, should have the right to choose whether or not to allow smoking in their premises and people can then choose whether to drink in a smoking environment or not. Interestingly, the government does not ban smoking completely, largely because of the huge income it gets from tobacco tax.

On the question of fox hunting, there is no logical reason why the sport should have been banned. The libertarian approach would be to use such persuasive arguments against the activity that people gave up hunting of their own free will, the activity would then fade away. Banning seems to be an acceptance that the argument has been lost, persuasion failed therefore make it illegal. Two examples of what could be considered libertarian behaviour in government were in Paraguay, a country I visited in the 1990s. These examples offer an idea of libertarian policy, but I would not regard the government of Paraguay then, per se, as libertarian.

There were few, if any laws in relation to food hygiene in Paraguay at that time, the principle being that people who own cafes and restaurants tend to want to make a profit and poisoning your customers is not good business practice. We found some of the best food and cleanest restaurants in Latin America in that country. They also had an open border policy at that time. The only control was that if you entered the country but could not find work, you received no state support whatsoever. As a consequence, they had a small but thriving immigrant community that had greatly contributed to the economy.

Libertarianism is rooted in classical liberalism but is often seen as a modern philosophy, largely because it has gained prominence in the last two or three decades as people grow to resent the ever-increasing intrusion of the state into their lives. There has also been renewed interest recently in the work of the philosopher and writer Ayn Rand and her theory of "ethical egoism". But it goes much further back than Ayn Rand to John Stuart Mill, Adam Smith and others far earlier. Indeed the Roman senator and philosopher Tacitus stated "the more corrupt the state, the more it legislates", a sentiment shared by many libertarians.

Liberal is now a dirty word to many people, having been hijacked by those who are far from liberal, such as the Liberal Democrats. As "democracy" often appears in the name of countries that are far from democratic, so the word "liberal" often appears in the title of organisations that are far from liberal in the classical sense. Others hear the word liberal and think of do-gooders looking at the bloodied victim of a crime and solemnly declaring that "the person who did that needs help". This is why there needs to be a clear separation between classical liberalism, or libertarianism, and modern liberalism.

Mandy Arrest Shock

Forgive me if I've missed something here, but it seems to be big news that the pinko liberal greenie veggie type who turned Mandelson's head into a trifle has been arrested. At a time when our politicians are so loathed I was amazed that the pinko wasn't nicked there and then.

But no, she could have also sprinkled hundreds and thousands on his head if she'd been properly organised. You would have expected security around HM's Business Minister, whatever his title is, to have had her pinned to the floor within seconds, for forgetting the jelly and cream if nothing else. But she just casually walked away and had a chat with a few TV reporters. The following says it all:

Lord Mandelson...told Andrew Marr that he was "slightly surprised" his attacker "could just saunter off without being apprehended".

That's scary, I actually agree with Mandy. Maybe all the security fellows were doubled up laughing like I was when I saw it.

But trust Jacqui Smith to come out with crap like this:

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told Sky News' Sunday Live programme: "I don't think in a democracy where people are able to speak up that anybody should chuck custard at anybody in the street. It's not appropriate."

Tell you what Jacqui, it's a damn sight more 'appropriate' than bombing the crap out of other countries.
