Germany And The Secret State

This report claims that 17,000 German civil servants, including senior police administrators, were members of the East German Stasi, the secret state security service.

Der Spiegel also carries this report about East Germans pining for the days of communism.

It makes interesting reading, especially when you compare the developing state surveillance and intrusion into our private lives. I am always struck, when reading these pieces, at the way our democracy increasingly resembles the totalitarian states we opposed during the Cold War.
